Best New Music: California Jaguars – Ships Hung In The Sky
![]()
Wakefield Byyrds fanatics California Jaguars do everything right on Portraits of My Bone follow up Ships Hung In The Sky. The album received the terse review “Shits flung in my eye” and minus two stars from Rolling Stone. But this writer thinks they are tone deaf. And cunts. Because this album sounds like a flannel shirted ride through the best of the late sixties. All the drugs and girls and festivals but without the stinking hippies and dumb philosophies. In fact I’d go as far as to say it’s better than The White Album and Pet Sounds put together. Hell, it’s even better than Dodgy‘s ultimate hippy anthem Staying Out for The Summer.
Sitars. Check. Tablas. Check. Eastern scales. Check. Bit of foreign singing. Check. Bit of indie guitar. Check. It’s all there and it’s never been done before. No wait, this sounds familiar. Didn’t someone do this before? I’m sure it was awesome, so…. In the absence of recalling California Jaguars lineage I’m giving this a high five in the form of a nine.
